ONE MOMENT IN TIME!

Another day! A morning. At sunrise! One may as well have called it dawn…Yes! Especially that one… Dawn! Sometimes it’s all one and the same word, others one and the same thing. The distinctions on the shades there-in do not always stand out. Because the sting of the mundane renders one too many numbed til it doesn’t really matter. For one already saw it yesterday, there it is today, as expected, with tomorrow a sure bet in occurrence and fashion alike.

This day though, the distinctiveness came blaring out in the black and white contrast of the piano. Only for the numbed fragile patriot, it was yet another day! A morning. At sunrise…A dawn! There was something in the air, a curious flicker that seemed to strike a rare chord within him. Or was his imagination playing games at him? It wouldn’t be the first time. In the frailty of old age, he had unleashed his fair share of drama. From night visions of chimpanzees doing martial arts at city square to the covert martins on a high classified counter espionage operation, his profile was without match!

He savored the glamorous sight of snowflakes, his seasonal favorite. This too had its cycle, arriving right on schedule. ‘The snowflakes!’ He thought to himself. ‘Yes! Had to be! The marvel seemed more sparkly than last year’s. Had to be it!’  He violently shook his head at the thought he was growing senile before his very own eyes! He hurriedly searched his pockets to confirm whether his latest speech was intact. He planned to do the last editing bit tonight. Then he had of course to scribble down something on The Snowflake soonest. Standing motionless near the huge heavy double door marking the entrance to the magnificent momentous giant structure, he was like one whose motion was dependent on the flow of the wind. All was still for a moment, until he thought he had seen something-heard something or something in between!

“Everything okay auspicious?! I wonder what speech is cooking this time round!” His counterpart spoke in a jocular mood as she emerged from the building.

“Right there! There!”

He spiritedly pointed with a firm index finger.

“I can almost bet my exotic gold nibbled speech writing pen! This stunning motorcade just swept past!”

“A what?!”

“Presidential motorcade. Unusually elaborate. Never seen anything like it. It was just me here at the time you know!”  He sounded a bit defensive. “Goodness! Such glory inexpressible…like one riding on the clouds!” He held his brow in apprehension.

“Where exactly was this?” She avoided making eye contact in a deliberate effort to muffle a violent laughter threatening to explode any moment now behind a concerned facial expression.

“See where that couple is?” He pointed resolutely to the lively pair approaching them.

“Right where they are now…wait a minute!” Came a gentle whisper as he lowered his hand, his eyes fixed on the couple. He was peculiarly zeroing in on the lady’s arms. His counterpart had a fair understanding of the shades of moments and their accompanying significance. This one, she could tell, was not impotent… Continued Next Tuesday

  1. Hi there! How well written this short story is! Since snowflakes have been mentioned in the longest paragraph of the story so far, it reminded me of my own poem at http://soundeagle.wordpress.com/2012/10/19/%e2%9d%84-%e2%9d%85-%e2%9d%86-snowflakes-tell-me-why-you-are/.

By the way, the title of this post is also the title of a love song sung by WHITNEY HOUSTON. Here’s the lyrics:

    “One Moment In Time”

    Each day I live
    I want to be
    A day to give
    The best of me
    I’m only one
    But not alone
    My finest day
    Is yet unknown

    I broke my heart
    Fought every gain
    To taste the sweet
    I face the pain
    I rise and fall
    Yet through it all
    This much remains

I want one moment in time
When I’m more than I thought I could be
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away
And the answers are all up to me
Give me one moment in time
    When I’m racing with destiny
Then in that one moment of time
    I will feel
    I will feel eternity

    I’ve lived to be
    The very best
    I want it all
    No time for less
    I’ve laid the plans
    Now lay the chance
    Here in my hands

Give me one moment in time
When I’m more than I thought I could be
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away
And the answers are all up to me
Give me one moment in time
    When I’m racing with destiny
Then in that one moment of time
    I will feel
    I will feel eternity

    You’re a winner for a lifetime
If you seize that one moment in time
    Make it shine

Give me one moment in time
When I’m more than I thought I could be
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away
And the answers are all up to me
Give me one moment in time
    When I’m racing with destiny
Then in that one moment of time
    I will be
    I will be
    I will be free
    I will be
    I will be free
